Wingdings Translator

Wingdings Mapping Reference

Wingdings is a symbol font, not a spoken language. This converter maps typed keys to Unicode symbols that can be copied as text. It supports Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 and Webdings; Gaster mode uses Wingdings. Some symbols are display substitutes, so the output is not an exact reproduction of every Microsoft font glyph.

How the mapping works

  1. Choose the original font. Each font has its own table; uppercase and lowercase keys are different.
  2. The encoder looks up mapped characters in the U+0020–U+00FF range. Unmapped characters, spaces and line breaks pass through unchanged.
  3. The output is a Unicode character. Where this site uses a substitute for a reference character, both code points are recorded in the data below.
  4. Text style appends U+FE0E to request text presentation. Support depends on the symbol, font and app; it cannot guarantee monochrome output. PNG export preserves the rendered image instead of relying on the recipient's fonts.

Keys, output and reference code points

These examples are generated from the converter's current Wingdings map. For example, uppercase L and lowercase l have different meanings. A display substitute is our compatibility choice, not a new official Unicode assignment.

Decoding and display limits

The decoder accepts this site's output, reference Unicode characters and selected legacy aliases. It also converts private-use characters U+F020–U+F0FF to their underlying keys and removes U+FE0E, U+FE0F and U+200D. Other unmatched characters pass through. Removing those formatting characters can change unrelated emoji sequences, so use the decoder for symbol messages rather than general text cleanup.

An image contains pixels rather than text and cannot be pasted into this decoder. If a document copies as ordinary letters after changing its font, those letters may already be the underlying message. Similar-looking symbols from another converter may use different code points; decoding arbitrary third-party output is not guaranteed.

Unicode symbols need a supporting system font. Their appearance can differ across devices, and unsupported characters may appear as boxes. This site does not supply Microsoft font files.

Download the mapping data

Read the complete symbol mappings (JSON). This static file is generated at build time from the same tables as the converter, with no login or JavaScript required.

Each record includes key, inputCodePoint, output, outputCodePoint, referenceCodePoint, referenceName and isDisplaySubstitute. The reference name describes the reference character, which may differ from the displayed substitute. Output values omit presentation selectors. This is encoding reference data, not the complete decoding algorithm or a translation API.

Sources and corrections

Microsoft documents the font family. Unicode documents the compatibility repertoire. This site's reference tables are adapted from Wikipedia contributor tables (snapshots dated October 2, 2026, under CC BY-SA 4.0), with our display substitutions added.

Frequently Asked Questions

▸Is Unicode output the same as the original Wingdings font?

Not always. The original font changes the glyph drawn for a stored character. This converter replaces the character with a Unicode symbol. Some outputs are display substitutes chosen for compatibility and can differ in shape from the original glyph.

▸Can this translator decode a Wingdings screenshot?

No. The translator accepts text, not images or camera input. For a screenshot, identify each symbol using the alphabet chart and enter its corresponding key. The downloadable mapping file is reference data, not an image recognition API.

▸Why does decoding with another font give a different result?

Wingdings, Wingdings 2, Wingdings 3 and Webdings assign different symbols to the same key. Select the font used to create the message. Gaster mode uses the classic Wingdings mapping.

▸Can software read the mappings without running JavaScript?

Yes. The symbol-mappings.json download contains all four encoding maps with input keys, output characters and reference code points. It is generated from the same maps as the translator. The reference text and examples on this page are also present in the initial HTML.
