About Webdings

Webdings was Microsoft's 1997 answer to the early web's hunger for icons. Bundled with Internet Explorer 4 and later Windows, it gave hobby webmasters a free library of pictures — browsers, globes, mail, storefronts, cars, planes — years before emoji existed. Designers Bigelow & Holmes were involved again, and the mapping was deliberately designed to avoid embarrassing key combinations, a lesson from the 1992 Wingdings controversy.

Today Webdings survives in documents, old websites and Office files, and its symbols live on as Unicode characters. This translator uses those standardized code points, so whatever you copy works on any device without the font.

Frequently Asked Questions

▸What are Webdings?

Webdings is a Microsoft symbol font released in 1997 with Internet Explorer 4. Like Wingdings it draws pictures instead of letters, but the picture set is web-era: computers, globes, documents, vehicles, buildings and everyday objects. This translator converts English to Webdings and back, live in your browser.

▸What is the difference between Webdings and Wingdings?

Different fonts, same keyboard. Wingdings (1992) is the classic set of hands, faces, zodiac and office symbols; Webdings (1997) is a newer, larger set of web-age icons — and unlike Wingdings it was designed so no key would produce an offensive combination. The same key can mean completely different things in each font, so always decode with the right one.

▸Which key is a checkmark in Webdings?

Lowercase a. The Webdings font maps the letter a to a heavy checkmark (✔). In Wingdings 1 the checkmark lives on the ü key instead, and in Wingdings 2 on capital P — three fonts, three checkmarks, one click each on this site.

▸Is Webdings still installed anywhere?

Webdings ships with Windows and Microsoft Office, so it's still widely available. On phones and non-Windows systems it usually isn't — which is exactly why decoding via this page (using standard Unicode characters) is the reliable route.
